Renovation of a Historic Apartment in Malá Strana, Prague

This project is the result of a complete renovation of a historic apartment in Prague covering 320 m², which was divided into two separate units. The larger portion, measuring 180 m², serves as a family residence that thoughtfully bridges the building’s heritage with contemporary spatial design.

The original layout was fundamentally reconfigured to meet the demands of modern family living. The former kitchen, previously located in the rear of the apartment, was relocated to a central position and seamlessly connected with the living room and dining area. By partially removing a partition wall, an open-plan living space was created, forming the natural heart of the home.

In this design, the kitchen becomes the visual axis and primary orientation point of the interior. Visible from the living room and entrance hall, it connects different areas of the apartment into a unified whole. A deep blue kitchen with veneered handles and a marble-effect ceramic worktop anchors the space, while a rounded kitchen island paired with striking pendant lighting above the dining table reinforces the spatial rhythm and structure.

In the quieter zone of the apartment, private family spaces were established. On the site of the former kitchen, a bedroom with a walk-in closet and ensuite bathroom was designed, oriented toward the courtyard. Additionally, the clients requested a separate family bathroom with a bathtub, a guest bathroom, and a laundry room — all of which were integrated into the layout with clear, logical planning.

The interior was designed to feel modern and serene while honoring the historic character of the home. A consistent palette of deep blue, oak veneer, marble, and soft grey tones runs throughout the space. Rounded shapes are a recurring motif — from the kitchen island to built-in wardrobes and bathroom furniture — softening the otherwise clean, geometric lines of the interior.

In the bathrooms, large-format tiles and flooring in shades of grey and marble were paired with cabinetry in deep blue, creating calm, timeless spaces that align with the overall visual language of the apartment. The purity of the design is further reinforced by hidden-frame doors JAP, which allow the interior to remain visually uncluttered and cohesive.

The apartment’s generous proportions are accentuated by high ceilings and preserved historic details, which are woven throughout the main living areas. These original features were thoughtfully paired with contemporary fittings and lighting to emphasize depth and highlight the sweeping sightlines between rooms. The result is an interior that marries the elegance of its historic context with the functionality and aesthetic of contemporary living.
