Full Renovation of a Historic 180m2 Apartment in Malá Strana, Prague

This project captures the full renovation of a 320 m² historic apartment in Prague, divided into two independent units. The larger 180 m² home was designed for family living, thoughtfully balancing the building’s heritage with contemporary comfort and a clean, timeless layout.

New layout and an open-plan living space

The apartment layout was completely reworked to suit modern family living. The former kitchen—previously located at the rear—was moved to a central position and connected to the living room and dining area. By partially removing a partition wall, we created an open-plan living space that naturally became the heart of the home.

In this concept, the kitchen acts as the apartment’s visual anchor and main point of orientation. Visible from both the entrance hall and living area, it connect the key zones together into one coherent whole. A deep blue kitchen with veneered handles and a marble-look ceramic countertop defines the space, while the rounded kitchen island and bold pendant lighting above the dining table strengthen the rhythm and composition of the interior.

Private zone: bedroom, walk-in closet, bathrooms and laundry room

A calm private zone was created in the quieter part of the apartment. On the site of the former kitchen, a bedroom with a walk-in closet and ensuite bathroom was designed, oriented toward the courtyard. The clients also requested a separate family bathroom with a bathtub, a guest bathroom, and a laundry room—each integrated into the plan with clear circulation and practical day-to-day flow.

The interior design was intended to feel modern, serene, and elegant, while respecting the historic character of the building. A consistent palette of deep blue, oak veneer, marble, and soft grey tones runs throughout. Rounded forms appear as a recurring motif—from the kitchen island to built-in wardrobes and bathroom cabinetry—softening the otherwise crisp, geometric lines.

Bathrooms: large-format tiles, marble and clean lines

In the bathrooms, large-format wall and floor tiles in layered grey tones are paired with marble accents and deep blue cabinetry. The result is a calm, timeless atmosphere that aligns with the visual language of the entire apartment. Clean lines are further emphasized by flush, hidden-frame doors by JAP, keeping transitions subtle and the overall look uncluttered.

The apartment’s generous proportions are highlighted by high ceilings, preserved historic details, and carefully planned lighting that enhances depth and emphasizes sightlines between rooms. The result is a historic apartment renovation in Prague that combines the elegance of its original context with the functionality and aesthetics of contemporary living.
